Signs of Burnout in High Achieving Women, and What Actually Helps

Burnout in high achieving women rarely looks like failure. It usually looks like someone still delivering: the promotion, the clean inbox, the family calendar, while sleep stops restoring her, patience runs thin, and rest starts to feel like risk. Because the results have not slipped yet, nobody notices, often including her.

This guide covers the quieter signs, why time off so often fails to fix it, and what actually changes the pattern. It is written from the work Makayla Maniscalco does with women, founders and leaders in Westminster, Denver and virtually.

Why burnout hides in high performers

High performers are good at coping, and coping hides the cost. The capacity to push through is exactly what lets exhaustion build for months without showing up in anyone’s results. By the time it is visible from the outside, it has usually been running a long time on the inside.

It also tends to be tied to identity. If you have always been the person who handles it, slowing down can feel less like rest and more like losing yourself.

Quiet signs of burnout to take seriously

  • Sleep that does not restore you. You sleep a full night and still wake up tired, or you lie awake at 2am running tomorrow.
  • Rest feels unsafe. Stopping triggers guilt or anxiety, so weekends turn into catch up time.
  • A shorter fuse. Your patience with people you love goes before your performance at work does.
  • Flatness. Things you used to enjoy feel like another item on the list.
  • More effort for the same result. Tasks that were easy now take real force.
  • Your body speaks first. Digestion, tension, headaches or getting sick every time you finally slow down.
  • Understanding without change. You can explain your pattern perfectly and it still runs.

Why time off rarely fixes it

A vacation removes the demand for a while. It does not change the pattern that made you unable to rest inside the demand. That is why so many people return from a break and are back where they started within weeks.

Better time management rarely helps either, because the calendar is usually not what is driving it. The driver tends to be a belief that rest has to be earned, an identity built on being the one who copes, and a nervous system that has forgotten how to stand down.

What actually helps

  1. Separate the environment from the pattern. Some of the pressure is real and external. Some of it is what your own conditioning adds. Knowing which is which is what makes any decision a clear one.
  2. Work with the nervous system, not just the mind. A body stuck on high alert does not settle because you understand why. Breath, somatic practice and regulation tools build the capacity to come down. Read more about nervous system regulation coaching.
  3. Go underneath the belief. Transformational coaching uses subconscious modalities such as neuro linguistic programming, Mental and Emotional Release and hypnosis to reach the conditioning that keeps rebuilding the same result.
  4. Rebuild boundaries from the inside. Boundaries hold when they no longer feel like a threat to who you are.
  5. Keep your clinical care. If you are seeing a therapist or doctor, coaching works alongside that, never instead of it.

How Makayla approaches burnout recovery

Makayla calls her work life recalibration rather than life coaching. Sessions blend direct conversation with subconscious and somatic work, and every coaching container is designed around the individual after the connection call rather than sold as a fixed package. She is a Certified Integrative Coach and 500 hour Registered Yoga Teacher, trained in neuro linguistic programming, Mental and Emotional Release and hypnosis, and has been leading this work since 2018.

In a client’s words: “I’ve done coaching before, and while it felt great in the short term, Makayla’s coaching has been different. It’s literally changed the trajectory of my life.” Luke S., Google review

Frequently asked questions

What are the early signs of burnout in high achievers?

Often it is not falling behind. It is sleep that no longer restores you, a shorter fuse with people you love, dreading things you used to enjoy, and needing more effort to produce the same result. High achievers usually keep performing well after these signs appear, which is why burnout goes unnoticed.

Can you recover from burnout without quitting your job?

Often, yes. Burnout is usually less about the hours than about how depleted you are when you work them. Working on nervous system capacity, boundaries and the beliefs that keep you overextending changes that. Some people do decide to leave, but it becomes a clear choice rather than an escape.

Is burnout coaching the same as therapy?

No. Coaching is forward focused and does not diagnose or treat any condition. Therapy is delivered by licensed clinicians. Many of Makayla’s clients see a therapist at the same time, and the two work well together. If you need clinical care, start with a licensed professional.

Where can I find burnout coaching near Denver?
