Short answer: therapy is clinical care from a licensed professional, often focused on healing the past or treating a condition. Life coaching usually works on goals, habits and accountability. Transformational coaching is forward focused like life coaching, but works underneath the goal, on the subconscious patterns, beliefs and nervous system responses that keep producing the same result.
They are not competitors. Plenty of people use more than one. The useful question is which one fits what you are trying to change right now.

When therapy is the right place to start
If you are in crisis, managing depression, anxiety or another diagnosed condition, working through trauma, or need a clinical assessment, start with a licensed therapist. A good coach will tell you that too. Coaching does not diagnose or treat, and it should never replace care you already have.
When life coaching fits
Life coaching works well when the obstacle really is structure: you need a plan, a deadline and someone to keep you honest. If you tend to follow through once the steps are clear, that may be all you need.
When transformational coaching fits
Transformational coaching is for the person who has the plan and still does something else. You can explain your pattern perfectly, maybe after years of reading and therapy, and it still runs. That is usually because the pattern lives below language, in conditioning, identity beliefs and a nervous system stuck on high alert.
Makayla Maniscalco calls this life recalibration rather than life coaching. Sessions move between direct conversation, work with the body and nervous system, and subconscious techniques. In hypnosis you stay aware and in control the whole time. She will reflect your strengths and name your blind spots, with care but without softening the point.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Am I in crisis, or managing a diagnosed condition? If yes, start with a licensed professional.
- Is my problem the plan, or the pattern that keeps undoing the plan?
- Do I want accountability, or do I want to understand and release what is driving me?
- What training does this person have, and can they explain it plainly?
- Will they work alongside my therapist or doctor rather than instead of them?

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a transformational coach and a life coach?
Most life coaching works at the level of goals, habits and accountability. Transformational coaching goes underneath that, to the conditioning, identity beliefs and stored emotional charge that keep producing the same result. Instead of a better plan on top of an old pattern, the aim is to release the pattern itself.
Should I see a therapist or a coach?
If you are in crisis, managing a diagnosed condition, or need to work through trauma clinically, start with a licensed therapist. If you are functioning, want to change how you live and lead, and keep hitting the same internal wall, coaching may fit. Many people benefit from both at once.
Can I work with a coach while seeing a therapist?
Yes, and many of Makayla’s clients do. The two do different jobs and work well side by side. It is worth telling both people what you are doing, so the pieces of work support each other rather than pulling in different directions.
Is transformational coaching covered by insurance?
No. Coaching is not a medical or clinical service, so it is not billable to insurance and does not require a referral. With Makayla, pricing is set per coaching container and discussed on a free connection call before you commit to anything.
Coaching is not therapy or medical care and does not diagnose or treat any condition. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or go to your nearest emergency room.
